What to expect

NSW has set itself one of the most ambitious housing targets in its history: 377,000 new well-located homes by 2029 under the National Housing Accord. Meeting that goal means rethinking where and how Sydney grows, and the NSW Government has been clear that the answer lies in greater density around transport corridors. Through initiatives such as the Transport Oriented Development program, the focus is on delivering homes where people can easily reach jobs, services and each other with public transport.

Mass transit will play a pivotal role in achieving this. Light rail expansion could be part of this solution and aligns with the priorities set out in Transport for NSW's Connecting NSW strategy.  It helps reduces transport disadvantage by connecting more people to jobs and service, supports the transition to net zero emissions, and reimagines road space to drive mode shift. It also enables whole-of-government outcomes, working across agencies to unlock housing alongside new transport investment.

This event presents a number of options for extending the current Sydney Light Rail Network that have been developed with the support of ALTRAC Light Rail, the NSW Government’s partner in the delivery, financing and operation of the network. You will see the three options proposed for and how each option could be a catalyst for housing uplift.

What to expect

  • The options: A presentation of the three light rail extension options, setting out the pros and cons of each.
  • The housing story: How the analysis of potential housing uplift was undertaken, and what it reveals about the scale of opportunity along each corridor.
  • The pathway through government: How proposals like these can be considered by government, the key objectives decision makers will be looking for, and the steps involved in taking them further.
  • Panel Q&A: Presenters will be joined by additional panel members for a Q&A session, giving you the chance to test the ideas and explore what comes next.

Registrations close Friday 6 November 2026.
