What to expect

Transport data is becoming an essential tool for councils seeking to make informed decisions about infrastructure investment, development assessment, traffic management, and long-term planning. But with growing volumes of data available, how can local government practitioners identify the right insights and apply them effectively?

Join us for this practical online webinar exploring how transport data can support evidence-based decision-making across local government. Designed for transport planners, traffic engineers, asset managers, engineering professionals and council decision-makers, this session will showcase emerging tools and approaches that help translate data into better outcomes for communities.

Supun will introduce the Trip Rate Integrated Planning System (TRIPS), demonstrating how the platform can support local government practitioners in transport planning, policy development and development assessment. Learn how data-driven insights can help councils better understand travel behaviour, forecast demand and strengthen the evidence base for decision-making.

This session draws on research with the City of Sydney, Surf Coast Shire Council and the City of Stonnington, funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and iMOVE. The councils used data from bike-mounted sensors, together with context such as weather, roadworks and disruptions, collision records and council information, all brought together in an AI-powered platform. Using these real examples, Irene follows the life of a project:

• Make the case: how councils used rider data to show where problems were, such as delays, poor road surface and near misses, and to build the evidence for funding applications. 
• Redesign: how that evidence shaped the new design and helped bring stakeholders and decision-makers on board. 
• Evaluate: how before-and-after data showed whether the changes worked, and how the results were reported back to council

Irene will also give an overview of the wider range of active travel data now available to councils, including cycling and pedestrian counters and multi-modal sensors, and when each is most useful. A live demo will show how cycling count data can be combined with sensor and contextual data in the same platform, giving councils a fuller picture of their network.
