What to expect

Presented by representatives from Main Roads WA and NTRO, this hybrid seminar will be delivered online and in-person and will present a range of case studies and assessment methods covering: Main Roads’ Heavy Vehicle Stability Assessment methodology, the Main Roads’ Freight Route Priority System Trial, analyses of the lateral positions of heavy vehicles across a pavement and the lateral sway of triple road trains.

As the state’s transport needs expand, we need to develop a better understanding of how heavy vehicles and in particular restricted access vehicles (RAV) impact our roads and are managed across our road networks. This in-person and online seminar will present a range of case studies and assessment methods covering: heavy vehicle stability assessments, the Main Roads freight priority trial, analyses of the lateral positions of RAV across a pavement and the lateral sway of RAV.

Speakers include:

Virang Vyas | Main Roads WA
Heavy Vehicle Stability Assessment Methodology

The presentation will explain how these assessments support the planning and design of roundabouts, loop ramps, and intersections across Western Australia. Attendees will gain an understanding of the critical role stability assessments play in ensuring new and upgraded road infrastructure can safely accommodate modern heavy vehicle combinations while maintaining freight productivity.

Ivan Kiss | Main Roads WA
Freight Route Priority System Trial Outcomes

Ivan Kiss will present the outcomes of the Freight Route Priority System Trial, an initiative aimed at reducing congestion, emissions, and braking events for heavy freight vehicles at signalised intersections. The session will outline how on-board telematics were used to request signal priority through the SCATS Priority Engine and how the trial delivered statistically significant improvements in travel times and average vehicle speeds along the Leach Highway corridor. The presentation will also cover the evaluation framework and pilot study findings, providing valuable insights into system performance and the impacts of signal priority on traffic flow during off-peak periods.

Doug Bartlett | NTRO
Using TIRTL Data to Monitor Triple Road Trains and Assess Trailer Sway

Doug Bartlett will present how data collected from infra-red traffic logging devices (TIRTL) is being used to better understand the performance and behaviour of triple road trains. Installed on a private road with frequent triple road train movements, the technology provides valuable insights into vehicle lateral positioning and how road surfaces and pavements are impacted across traffic lanes. The presentation will also demonstrate how TIRTL data can be used to assess trailer sway by analysing the expected deviation of each axle group relative to the front axle. Together, these applications offer important evidence to support road design, pavement management, and heavy vehicle safety improvements.
