What to expect

Our work as transport practitioners is fundamentally about influencing choices and behaviour, and there is increasing value recognised from incorporating behavioural insights into our planning and design. Yet there is still relatively limited understanding across our profession of what this really means in practice, how to actually do this.

This session is designed to establish the principles and value of behavioural insights. It will establish provide a baseline of understanding for attendees to move forward with incorporating behavioural insights into planning and operations, as well as developing behaviour change or travel demand management initiatives.

Drawing on local and global best practice and theory, it will outline the principles of behaviour change - the why, why it is so important to take a user perspective in our work. It will then outline the process or method by which behavioural insights can be constructed. And then illustrate how they can be used to inform decision and the design of successful initiatives, supporting with examples. It is envisaged as an interactive, hands-on session, with attendees actively involved throughout, based on the 'learning by doing' principle, taking away learnings that enable them to get to work developing their own initiatives."

Liz is an internationally recognised specialist in the field of data collection, behaviour change and behavioural insights with 29 years of experience in designing and evaluating programs and strategies that bring understanding to, and measure travel behaviour.

With Kate Mackay she is co-chair of the Australasian Transport Forum Behavioural Insights group which has members from throughout Australia and New Zealand.
