What to expect

The Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) worked with local governments between 2015 and 2023, to develop, trial and evaluate nine Safe Active Streets (SAS), totalling 26.3 km across WA. The SAS routes used local area traffic management treatments to support 30km/h environments, with improved amenity, to encourage more people to walk, wheel and ride in their communities. The evaluation continued beyond the project delivery period, with interim project reporting provided to all stakeholders in 2023 and final program reporting completed in 2026.

The SAS Pilot Program was successful in trialling a new approach to road safety and active transport on suburban streets. The program has attracted national and international interest, and the SAS concept is being taken up by local authorities in WA and across Australia. The recently published SAS Pilot Program Final Evaluation Report detailed the rich array of insights generated through the pilot program. The soon to be published Safe Active Street Design Guidance, informed by the evaluation insights, will provide principles and recommendations to help local councils and practitioners consider the application of design treatments and measures appropriate to their local context. With this information, practitioners can design and implement more safe active streets, creating effective 30km/h shared street spaces for people to walk, wheel and ride comfortably and safely in their communities.

This webinar will provide an overview of the key design principles and evaluation insights derived through the SAS Pilot Program. Some audience interaction will be included through use of live interaction tools, and time for Q&A with the lead engineer, Caroline, and lead evaluator, Zarin.

Registrations close 22 May 2026.

Learning Outcomes

  • Familiarise with the Safe Active Streets model, including design recommendations and public engagement approaches gleaned through the award winning Safe Active Streets Pilot Program and Evaluation pioneered by the Western Australian State Government
  • Understand how 30km/h speed limits and supporting treatments can be used to deliver strategic active transport corridors where constraints do not allow for other forms of separated infrastructure.
  • Hear rigorous before and after evaluation evidence from a real-world Australian context, of the various impacts and benefits of 30 km/h speed limits and combinations of design features applied to nine unique Safe Active Street projects.
  • Learn the range of measures that can be applied and the key factors that have been found through the pilot program to influence user behaviour and community sentiment positively.
  • Learn how 30 km/h re-designed streets connecting key destinations, can generate positive BCRs by more generally support enhancing new and existing users’ walking and bike riding activity, and supporting placemaking and community development in a suburban residential context
  • Opportunity to discuss learnings with the practitioners who delivered and evaluated the project.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who should attend this session
