What to expect

Across Australia and globally, governments are being asked to deliver safer, healthier and more productive streets - yet public investment systems remain overwhelmingly geared toward moving cars, not people. As the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035) gets underway, this session makes the case that national and state/territory governments must now play a far more active role by establishing and scaling up Liveable Streets Investment Programs: dedicated, long‑term funding programs that co‑invest in walking, cycling and people‑centred street projects across cities and towns. Drawing on lessons from international programs and Australia’s own experience, the webinar shows how modest but predictable reallocation of road budgets can unlock large‑scale, high‑impact change.

The session will also highlight why Liveable Streets investment is an economic and resilience imperative - particularly in the context of rising fuel prices, global energy instability and the current oil shock linked to conflict in the Middle East. By improving access without car dependency, Liveable Streets Investment Programs can help households, cities and national economies become more resilient to oil price volatility while delivering immediate safety, health and productivity benefits. Designed for policymakers, transport agencies and advocates, this webinar aims to spark concrete action over the next decade - not more token, tiny funding pots, but for governments to set up public investment systems that deliver Liveable Streets at speed and scale.

Registrations close 21 June 2026.
