What to expect
Introduction to Strategic Modelling provides a practical, plain English overview of strategic transport modelling for professionals who want to better understand how models are used to inform planning and investment decisions. Starting with the fundamentals, this session explains what a transport model is, why and when modelling is applied, and the different types of strategic models (macro, meso and micro). Participants will gain a clear understanding of typical model inputs — including supply and demand — and the kinds of outputs models generate, without diving into complex mathematics.
The session also explores how reliable our models really are, drawing on a long running case study from Wollongong where multiple forecast years have now passed. Through this lens, the presenter highlights what can go wrong, key dos and don’ts of modelling, and the real world consequences of poor assumptions or misuse. The session concludes by reinforcing the benefits of getting modelling right and how well-applied strategic modelling can support better, more informed transport outcomes.
