What to expect

Trip generation data underpins transport planning and development assessment decisions across Australia, yet current practice remains heavily reliant on site-based trip rates derived from fragmented datasets. Inconsistent survey methods, definitions and reporting formats limit comparability, transparency and long-term value, constraining the ability of practitioners to respond to increasingly complex planning challenges.

The first part of this session examines how trip generation is currently applied in practice, highlighting key limitations including variability in data collection, lack of contextual insight, and the difficulty of applying static trip rates across diverse urban settings. It then outlines how more coordinated approaches to data collection and management, supported by initiatives such as the TRIPS database, can improve the quality, traceability and usability of trip generation evidence.

The second part of the session will focus on how enabling interoperability between datasets can unlock a more holistic understanding of transport behaviour. By integrating site-based survey data with Household Travel Survey, Census and accessibility data, the focus shifts from isolated trip rates to activity chains and the underlying drivers of travel. This aligns with the global transition from traditional four-step models to Activity/Agent Based Models (ABMs), highlighting the opportunity to support more robust, behaviour-informed transport planning outcomes.

Registrations close 14 May 2026.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the limitations of current trip rate-based approaches in transport planning and development assessment
  • Identify key challenges associated with fragmented data, inconsistent methodologies, and lack of contextual insight
  • Recognise the value of more coordinated and structured approaches to collecting and managing trip generation data
  • Understand how interoperability between datasets (e.g. site surveys, HTS, Census, accessibility data) can enhance evidence quality
  • Appreciate the shift from trip rates to understanding travel behaviour by including activity chains and drivers of demand
  • Recognise how improved data integration can support emerging, data-intensive modelling approaches such as Activity/Agent Based Models (ABMs)

Who should attend this session

  • Traffic engineers and transport planners preparing transport impact assessments
  • Transport modellers and forecasters
  • State and local government development assessment officers and transport data analysts
  • Researchers in transport planning and modelling
