What to expect

Pedestrian planning is central to integrated transport and place outcomes. Over 90% of people walk each week, yet many urban environments still prioritise vehicle movement over pedestrian safety, comfort and convenience.

This CPD session focuses on how to systematically plan for walking at precinct and centre scale. It explains how land use, density, street permeability and destination mix shape real walking behaviour. Evidence shows behavioural tipping points at around 800-900 metres for everyday trips, and that fine-grained street networks (around 45 intersections per km²) significantly increase walking.

The session will cover:

  • Structural drivers of walkability -density, mixed use and network design
  • Designing logical trip chains that support everyday journeys
  • Safe speeds (30 km/h in high pedestrian areas) and frequent crossings
  • Inclusive design, including night-time safety considerations
  • Applying NSW tools, including the Walking Space Guide and Built Environment Indicators
  • Using AI models such as PAWS and C-MAPS to diagnose walkability and test interventions

Participants will gain practical tools to assess, improve and advocate for walking outcomes, ensuring walking is embedded as a core transport and place objective rather than a secondary consideration.

Registrations close 12 May 2026.

Learning Outcomes

  •  Understand how land use, density, and street network design influence walking behaviour
  • Apply evidence-based thresholds (walking threshold distances, key land use elements like intersection density) to assess walkability
  • Design safe pedestrian environments with proven elements such as 30 km/h speed zones and frequent crossings
  • Use NSW tools including the Walking Space Guide, Checklist for Walkable Density and Built Environment Indicators
  • Understand the potential for AI models such as PAWS and C-MAPS to diagnose walkability and test interventions

  • Traffic engineers designing pedestrian infrastructure
  • Local government strategic planners
  • State and local government transport planners
  • Transport consultants involved in walking and cycling
