What to expect
Transport planning is, at its heart, people planning. Whether we're designing a safer main street, shaping a citywide network or refining a local crossing, every project is ultimately about how people move, feel and experience their daily journeys. This presentation makes the case for putting community and stakeholder engagement at the centre of that work, no matter the scale.
We'll explore creative, practical and achievable ways to connect with the people who use our transport systems every day - from quick conversations to full engagement programs. You'l hear how thoughtful engagement can uncover insights that reshape priorities, strengthen project support and reveal lived experiences that data alone can't capture. We'll also talk honestly about the common pitfalls: when engagement becomes tokenistic, when certain voices dominate, and when good data goes unused.
The session will share ideas, tools and examples you can take straight back to your projects. We'll also look at how to interpret engagement information and turn it into confident, transparent and defensible decisions. You'll leave with a richer understanding of the people behind the movement patterns, and practical ways to weave their perspectives into every stage of transport planning.
