What to expect
Join the WA Brach for a panel discussion focusing on the Good, the Bad and the Ugly from the Stephenson-Hepburn plan, 70 years on.
The Stephenson-Hepburn Plan has made a significant impact to the urban fabric of metropolitan Perth since it was derived 70 years ago in 1955. As the first comprehensive plan for the metropolitan region, it has defined the paradigm for planning to the present day. It led to the creation of the Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS) which underpins land use allocation in Perth and set in motion a pattern of growth that has continued to the present day. This significant influence means that many current challenges and benefits of planning in Perth today can be traced back to the Stephenson-Hepburn Plan.
The Plan has shaped the ongoing planning for the transport network across Perth, creating certainty of purpose. It has been a great benefit in delivering a distinct land use dispersal, despite some gaps in the network. Yet, it has also increased costs to build and maintain a transport ‘system’ that offers the best economic returns, creates barriers to local travel, and stalls increased investments in other modes of transport. (something like this that will cause some raised eyebrows and interest)
Come along to this panel session to find out more about how the Stephenson-Hepburn plan continues to shape Perth (for good and ill) and how this perspective can help improve our planning for the future.
This session will provide thought provoking perspectives of a range of speakers, as well as engaging in an interactive Q&A with the audience. The session is designed for planners both from a land use and transport perspective.
Presenters include:
· Justin McKirdy – Executive Director - Urban Mobility | Department for Transport and Major Infrastructure
· Kathy Bonus – Chief Planning Advisor – Reform, Design and State Assessment | Department of Planning Lands and Heritage
· Cole Hendrigan – Place Leader – Integrated Transport | Town of Victoria Park
· And more.
